Principal's Message

Dear Walker Community:

Welcome to the Walker Jr. High School website. We, at Walker, are committed to creating a positive learning environment for all students. We enjoy watching our students succeed academically and socially. We look forward to working with students and their families. We are a team and together we can help all students succeed at Walker. We want every student to leave Walker Jr. High School prepared for high school. We are committed to a rigorous curriculum and high levels of student achievement. We believe all students can learn, and we will assist students who may need more time and support to achieve academic success.

Our API this year is 783. We are “stepping it up” to 800 this year. Our teachers provide rigorous academic programs in a caring environment. This year teachers are collaborating and creating professional learning communities. Every Thursday we have an early release day, and all teachers use this time to collaborate about instruction and common assessments. We are focusing on best practices so that your students get the best education possible. Our school is a certified Middle Years Programme (MYP) through the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). We are also certified as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) school. Both of these programs promote rigor in all classes so that our students are able to do their very best with their academics. These programs offer teachers strategies that will assist students with note taking, and thinking about knowledge globally/internationally.

Walker is a great place to be. We keep your students safe at school by following a strict dress code policy, and enforcing school rules. We protect instructional minutes, and we teach from bell to bell. Every minute in the classroom matters, and teachers utilize that time to cover state standards so that your students are prepared for the STAR testing in the spring. Our teachers also work very hard to prepare your students for life. In depth discussions, within the classroom and pertaining to the standards, will help students see how the knowledge they gain relates to the real world.

We, at Walker, value the support we receive from the families and the community. Please continue your support by participating in our PTA, EL, GATE and volunteering at our school. At home, please check your student’s agenda planner daily. Students should be writing in that agenda planner for every class, every day. Parents can utilize the agenda planner to communicate with teachers about what your students is learning or concerns you may have. WE look forward to building a relationship with you that focuses on creating successful educational opportunities for your child. I look forward to meeting you and I hope that you have a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,

Daphne Hammer
